Comparisons of Education in China and England

This video taken from YouTube explains what it is like to study at a high school in China by showing us two different high schools from a city in China called Dalian. Immediately, we are made aware of how important education is to students in China as we are taught that these particular schools only accept students who obtained high levels in their entrance exams and who are believed to go on to studying at a high achieving university.

We are then shown how big the campuses are, it is clear to see that these schools pride themselves in their reputation as a school and want to give the best impression to outsiders by having big and clean grounds.

The presenter in the video then goes on to mention about how as he walked into one of the schools, he was greeted with 'huge gold embossed words' which read “Nation, future, pride” This alone makes it clear that the school is taken very seriously by its students and students are reminded daily that the reason they are there is for their nation, future and pride. It is stated that classrooms also have motivational text across the walls which read “self motivation, self improvement, innovation, triumph” which again, proves how students are taught that they need to succeed in order to go to a top university- which then falls back onto the schools reputation.

In the other high school, a large display is at the front of the school which contains names of previous year students who were accepted into top universities, making it clear that education is taken seriously and it is extremely competitive.

The video then goes on to talk to current students at the high school who state that they currently take 9 classes and after this semester, they then split into 2 different courses of the sciences or liberal arts- both of which have a different set of subjects and the students are already studying what the school thinks they can achieve. I believe this hinders a students ability and confidence as if a student likes geography for example, and they were a science student they would not be able to study geography, immediately causing a huge amount of pressure to succeed in science as this is what they are believed to be most successful in.

After 10th grade, it is stated that a student has lots of homework to do everyday so must not lead a busy lifestyle outside of school- could this be hindering a students early adulthood life? In England, we encourage our students to take part in extra curricular activities in order to learn in a different way but also simply to have fun after school, however this video shows that parents frown upon these activities in China as they believe it interferes with education.

To conclude, this video is very informative and shows what it is like to be in a high school in China, covering all aspects. It is clear to see that high schools in China and England are completely different and both could possibly benefit from adapting the opposite approach.
