Comparisons of Education in China and England

In England if a student does not perform well in an exam it will not affect their life drastically. Instead the exams result is used to motivate children to achieve a better results next time. However, in China overall performance in the Goakoa exam determines student’s ability, dreams and aspirations. Therefore students are in great pressure to perform well and pass, there is no other option.

Analysing further, the Goakoa exam determines intellectual ability and achievement, based on this students are given a place at college. Unfortunately, for many Chinese students the pressure is too great to handle as a result, for those students who believe they performed poorly did not wait to see their results. A study revealed that “500 students commit suicide each year under academic pressure brought by the examination-based education system”. (Ncess.org, 2014). Analyzing this key point it is evident that education, exam and grading has a huge impact on the lives of Chinese students.

Moreover, a key aspect highlighted throughout the video is parental aspirations. With the introduction of the one child Policy (1979) Parents in China have high expectations of their single offspring. Students feel there is immense pressure from their parents. Critically analyzing further, parental aspiration can positively influence student ability as family can be a drive and motivation in a student’s education. However, it can negatively influence the education as parental pressure may be too much therefore, students may seek to commit suicide to save themselves and their families from shame.

To conclude, based on my primary research it is evident China’s educational system is based upon exams that solely determine student ability. But I feel this is unfair as some students may be kinesthetic learners and perform well in practicals or presentations. Therefore I feel China’s education system can improve if they take a child centred approach, which means they listen and meet the child’s needs.

Throughout this academic writing piece it is my intention to critical analyse the video “In China, 1 Exam is Everything”. (YouTube, 2014). This video will primarily focus on the National College Entrance Exams (Goakoa) and the academic pressure it has on students. To do this I will be comparing and contrasting two articles. The first article (Universityworldnews.com, 2014) focuses on the academic pressure Goakoa can have on students and their education. The second article (Harris, 2007) highlights the effect of parental aspirations on students in China.

“In China, 1 Exam is Everything”, shows the academic pressure Chinese students endure from the Goakoa. China remains a highly competitive education system and aims to improve its economic growth but, for many Chinese student education is a route to a better future. Therefore it is vital to be educated, as education leads to employment from which money is earned as a result, individuals can purchase goods in life like cars and houses.

The video highlights the importance of the Goakoa exam, students must pass the Goakoa exam in order to ensure their place at a college. The Goakoa pays no attention to extra-curricular work, only a score on a single test, it places students on a career path they will follow for the rest their life. I feel the exam result can send a child to the factory floor or to the top levels of China’s booming economy.
